Another different project: cantilever for the paper industry

Münstermann has made a name for itself in the past years in the design, development and production of drying units, de-dusting solutions and their fitting and exacting handling systems.

The roots of the company lie in the design, development and production of customer-specific special-build machines. An order placed by the company Schlatter Industries AG shows just how Münstermann’s designers come onto top form when special tasks are given.

Simply another use

The expression cantilever describes in general a one-armed lever, for example, a cantilever beam for a projecting building construction. In our case it simply concerns a cantilever construction which has been produced a C-shaped hoop and where its upper and lower arms are bolted together. On to its open end of its upper arm several large rollers are fitted in most cases when in operation, whereas the lower arm is usually accommodated in a specially devised basement area where it is anchored to the basement floor. The upper arm fulfils the function of a cantilever beam; the lower arm serves as a static stabiliser to the cantilever or in certain cases also as the traversing gear for the movement of the whole structure in a longitudinal direction.

Special features of the cantilever in detail

  • The total cantilever unit and depending on the model will weigh up to 60 tonnes whereby the upper arm is 18 metres in length
  • The deflexion of the upper arm may only be 120 mm when measured at the open end of the cantilever even when loaded down by several rollers (total weight of 160 tonnes)
  • The rollers, which are fitted to the cantilever, have a weight of approx. 40 tonnes.
  • The upper and lower arms, making up the C-shaped hoop, are bolted together only on a length of 2.5 metres.
  • Over 600 kg of welding wire are used in the welding of the cantilever

Description of operation

The cantilever is part of a complex piece of machinery on which technical fabrics are processed further for the paper industry. After this processing the material is then fitted to the paper machine and acts as a transporting wire (conveyor belt with characteristics of a wire suction section) in order to produce lengths of paper. As the material is in endless reels the rollers have to be mounted to the cantilever arm on only one side so that the material can be drawn over the rollers. As soon as the proportions regarding space are satisfactory then it will be necessary to move the complete cantilever including the rollers lengthways. In this case the cantilever is mounted on rails and is equipped with a massive running gear. It is also therefore necessary that both ends of each roller are secured to the cantilever. After the piece of material has been fitted it is stretched, thermo-fixed, ground and coated and partially calendered. Depending on the type of material further specific processes may be added.
